The mountain skills training is the first step in gaining the Mountain Skills Qualification. It is a personal efficiency award which introduces you to all the skills needed to stay safe in the mountains.

Meet Your Instructor

Mark Keogh

Mountain Leader - Rock Climbing Instructor - Multi-Pitch Climbing Guide - Remote Emergency Care.

My name is Mark Keogh and I will be facilitating your Mountain Skills Course. I am a qualified Mountain Leader and have trained as a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor through the Mountain Training Board in the UK.

 

Being in the mountains is my passion, and in recent years I have turned my focus to facilitating adventures and skills courses for others. It brings me complete joy to be able to pass on the skills I’ve learned to help others become competent in the mountains.

Understanding the mountain environment is one of the most important aspects of being safe in the mountains. During the day, we will look at how you can best prepare yourself for a safe time on the hills.

Night Navigation

Night navigation is a vital skill to have. If you continue onto Mountain skills 2, you will have the opportunity to learn how to navigate at night.

All You Need To Know

Here are some of the topics we will be covering over the course of the day.

  • Mountain safety. 
  • Weather and planning.

Meeting Time : 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Depending on the day we may go past the finishing time, so please allow yourself until 5pm.

Meeting Point: Crotty’s Rock 

  • Waterproofs (jacket and pants)
  • Warm Layers. 
  • Gloves & Hat.
  • Boots are essential.
  • A big lunch and snacks for the day. 
  • Map. The map number will be sent via email
  • If you have a compass, then please bring this with you.
  • Head torch
